Sasterawan Negara S Othman Kelantan atau Syed Othman Syed Omar telah kembali ke rahmatullah jam 12:30 tengah malam tadi. Allayrahaman meninggal di hospital Serdang dalam usia 69 tahun.
Menurut novelis Zahari Efandi yang juga adik iparnya Allahyarham mengidap sakit kencing manis dan jantung telah dimasukkan ke hospital sejak dua minggu lepas.
Jenazah Allahyarham kini ditempatkan di masjid Bangi Perdana, Bangi. Jenazah akan dikebumikan jam 11:30 pagi ini. Alfatihah. Catatan: Terima kasih kepada W Zailan kerana menyampai maklumat.

Perginya pejuang bahasa

s. osman Kelantan semasa menerima anugerah Sasterawan Negara pada tahun 2003.
DIA tidak pernah mengganggu saya, demikian tegas pengarah filem tersohor U-Wei Haji Saari apabila diminta memperkatakan pengalaman mengadaptasi novel Juara (1973) karya Sasterawan Negara Dr. S. Othman Kelantan menjadi filem Jogho (1997). Juara adalah sebuah novel yang menyingkap politik Melayu di sempadan Malaysia-Thailand.
"Saya percaya dia faham bahawa filem Jogho adalah medium baru yang mengambil semangat dan zat dari novel Juara," sambung U-Wei yang mengarah dan menerbitkan sendiri filem itu dengan biaya NHK Jepun.
Menurut U-Wei, dia memang terpikat dengan isu-isu politik Melayu yang bernaung di bawah dua bendera yang berbeza. Juara bagi U-Wei sangat memikat tetapi proses adaptasi ke filem memperlihatkan pertembungan pemikiran U-Wei dan S. Othman Kelantan, melampaui kisah tentang tradisi laga lembu di kampung Melayu di selatan Thailand.
Juara adalah antara novel karya S. Othman Kelantan yang diperkatakan sekaligus mengangkat namanya dalam dunia kesusasteraan. Pemikiran politik dan perjuangan Melayu S. Othman Kelantan tertera dengan jelas dalam Juara sekali gus menjadi refleksi politik Melayu zaman itu di negara ini.
Tengah malam kelmarin, S. Othman Kelantan menghembuskan nafas terakhir di Hospital Serdang akibat sakit jantung pada usia 70 tahun. S. Othman Kelantan atau nama sebenar Syed Othman Syed Omar dilahirkan 13 November 1938 di Tebing Tinggi, Kemunin, Kota Bahru, Kelantan.
Dalam dunia kesusasteraan, Allahyarham menonjol sebagai novelis dan cerpenis yang membawa isu-isu rakyat selain dikenali antara sarjana sastera yang banyak menyumbang dalam pembangunan kesusasteraan.
S. Othman Kelantan dipilih sebagai Sasterawan Negara kesembilan pada 2003 selepas menceburi dunia kesusasteraan sejak tahun 1960-an. Kalau diukur dengan angka, jumlah novel S. Othman Kelantan mungkin kecil malah tidak dapat menyaingi penulis novel popular yang menghasilkan berpuluh-puluh novel.
Tetapi dalam dunia pengkaryaan, jumlah yang banyak bukan ukuran keunggulan pemikiran di dalamnya. Begitu juga S. Othman Kelantan yang menghasilkan 12 novel dan empat novel remaja.
Tetapi karya-karya S. Othman Kelantan memberi kesan yang besar serta menyumbang kepada perubahan landskap sosial dan politik di negara ini.
Antara novel yang banyak diperkatakan ialah Pengertian (1966), Pertentangan (1967), Angin Timur Laut (1969), Juara (1973), Ruang Perjalanan (1989), Wajah Seorang Wanita (1990) dan Orang Kota Bahru (2003). Novel Orang Kota Bahru telah diadaptasi ke pentas teater oleh Fauziah Nawi beberapa tahun lalu.
Perjuangan"Beberapa novel Allahyarham seperti Juara dan Angin Timur Laut menyingkap perjuangan politik manakala Orang Kota Bahru dan Wajah Seorang Wanita memperlihatkan kegigihan wanita Kelantan dalam survival hidup," demikian kata penulis dan penyair, Rahimidin Zahari.
Menurut Rahimidin, kali terakhir Allahyarham datang berjumpa dia dan Sutung Umar RS ialah pada 14 Jun lalu di Istana Budaya tetapi Allahyarham kelihatan seperti biasa saja.
"Ahad lepas saya menziarah Allahyarham di hospital. Allahyarham hanya mengangguk tetapi tidak boleh bercakap," jelas Rahimidin yang menganggap S. Othman Kelantan penulis yang menaikkan nama sasterawan Kelantan di bidang kesusasteraan.
Hubungan dengan rakan-rakan penulis di negeri kelahiran tidak pernah renggang. Allahyarham pernah menjadi Ketua Satu Persatuan Penulis Kelantan (PPK) 1973 hingga 1976 serta menjadi Penasihat Persatuan Seniman dan Penulis Kelantan (Puspa).
S. Othman Kelantan juga antara sasterawan dan sarjana sastera yang memperlihatkan pendirian yang sangat jelas tentang kedudukan bahasa Melayu di negara ini.
Allahyarham tidak kompromi dengan mana-mana usaha yang memperleceh bahasa Melayu atas alasan apa sekalipun. Maka Allahyarham kelihatan sedikit terkeluar dari arus perdana dan antara segelintir sasterawan yang melihat novel kontroversi bad word karya Sasterawan Negara, Datuk Shahnon Ahmad dengan pemikiran, bukan perasaan.
Pemergian S. Othman Kelantan meninggalkan pewaris yang meneruskan perjuangannya. Sasterawan muda S.M. Zakir (Syed Mohd. Zakir) yang juga Setiausaha Agung Persatuan Penulis Nasional (Pena) antara anak Allahyarham yang meneruskan legasi S. Othman Kelantan dalam kesusasteraan. Semoga yang patah akan tumbuh, yang pergi akan berganti. ---------------------
